trace metals toxicity to the body structures of mullet liza klunzingeri (mugilidae: perciformes)
Authors
abstract
rapid industrialization, installation of mega-desalination plants and suspected trace metals discharges in the kuwait marine environment instigated us to determine the trace metals toxicity on the body structures (first dorsal fin, otolith and scales) of the commercially relished mullet fish, liza klunzingeri. 96 h toxicity test with fe, cd, ni, as, showed the body structure of l. klunzingeri to attain loec (lowest observed effective concentration) at test concentrations of 10î¼g/l, 4.0î¼gl, 8.0î¼g/l and 2.0î¼g/l, respectively. observation revealed high metal concentrations in scales followed by first dorsal fin and otolith irrespective of the sampling sites. mean bioaccumulation factor (baf) in body structures was high in the sequence of ni> fe > as >cd. trace metals bioaccumulation was high in samples reared in kuwait bay than in the kuwait coastal waters. these findings supported evidences to body structures of l. klunzingeri as an indicator to trace metal pollution besides its use for species aging.

Reproductive biology of the mullet Mugil liza (Teleostei: Mugilidae) in a tropical Brazilian bay
The reproductive biology of Mugil liza Valenciennes, 1836 is described as a contribution to an elaborate management programm. A total of 243 specimens (89 males and 154 females) were collected in the Sepetiba Bay in south-eastern Brazil from July/2006 to June/2007. The gonadosomatic index (IG) and the sequential development of the ovaries observed through histological studies suggested that the...
full textToxic heavy metal concentration in soft tissues of gray mullet Liza aurata (Mugilidae: Perciformes) during the sexual maturity and sexual rest
This study was conducted to determine the concentration of five heavy metals, including lead, cadmium, mercury, arsenic, and chromium in muscle, liver and gills of the gray mullet, Liza aurata in southern part of the Caspian Sea. The samples were collected during sexual maturity (in the fall) and sexual rest (in the spring). The mean concentration of lead, cadmium, mercury, arsenic, and chromiu...

full textModerate pathogenic effect of Ligophorus uruguayense (Monogenoidea, Ancyrocephalidae) in juvenile mullet Mugil liza (Actinopterygii, Mugilidae) from Brazil.
Monogenoidea pathogenic activity can elicit various histological responses in fish. Species of Ligophorus are specific parasites of mullets, and its relationship with host fish may result in a moderate pathogenic action. In order to ascertain this relationship, estuarine mullets (Mugil liza) were collected in an estuary, reared in laboratory, for three weeks, and forwarded for histological and ...
full textMolecular Phylogeny of Mugilidae (Teleostei: Perciformes)
Molecular phylogenetic relationships among five genera and twelve Mugilidae species were investigated using published mitochondrial cytochrome b and 16S rDNA sequences. These analyses suggested the paraphyly of the genus Liza and also that the separation of Liza, Chelon and Oedalechilus might be unnatural. Moreover, all the species of the genus Mugil plus orthologs of Crenimugil crenilabis clus...
full textReproduction of Klunzinger Mullet, Liza klunzingeri , in coastal waters of Khuzestan Province (Persian Gulf)
Some reproduction characteristics of keeled mullet, Liza klunzingeri, were studied during Apr. 2003 to Feb. 2004 in Khuzestan waters of the Persian Gulf. A total of 836 samples were monthly collected from two fish landings of Bahrekan and Hendijan; 727 specimens were studied from point of sex determination, and 60 specimens were studied from the fecundity point of view. This species was found t...
